Google’s Co-Head of Ethical AI Timnit Gebru Says She Was Fired for Email

Google fired Timothy Gebru, the technical co-leader of the Ethical Eye team. More than 1,200 Google employees and more than 1,500 researchers have protested the company's dismissal of the black woman scientist.

Gebru alleges that he was fired to suppress marginalized voices by covering up his research against Google. In the research report, he criticized the organization's diversification efforts.

He made this allegation by tweeting on Wednesday. In an email to an internal group of women and friends working in the company's AI department, Gebru noted that there was "no accountability" for Google's leadership change.

However, in an e-mail sent to employees on Friday, Jeff Dean, the head of Google's AI division, presented the whole matter as a resignation.

He also commented that his research report was "not worthy of publication." At the same time, important DEI has requested not to stop the work of the program.
