Brazilian court orders investigation of Facebook ads

Brazil's Supreme Federal Court has ordered an investigation into the sale of a protected area in the Amazon Rainforest via Facebook.

Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Luis Roberto Barroso has called on the country's attorney general and the justice ministry to investigate, citing a BBC investigative report.

The BBC's investigation into the sale of plots as large as 1,000 football pitches in a Facebook classified ad in the Amazon Forest.

Expressing surprise at the advertisement for the sale of the forest, the court called on the government to take "appropriate civil and criminal action".

Facebook said it was "ready to work with local authorities". But they will not be able to take independent action to stop this trade.

The Amazon is the world's largest rainforest and an important carbon store that slows global warming. It is home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million indigenous peoples.
